Message from Your Chief
Caddie
The message this year is real simple and yet
requires a lot of work to accomplish, EWGA
is for "Every Woman".
In trying to determine which programs to
include this year, your board spent a lot of
time asking the question, what do all of our
members want and what are the recurring
questions that keep surfacing. In our
research, we determined that the approximate
skill level of our membership was as
follows:
0-9 Handicap -
7% 10-19
Handicap - 48%
20-29 Handicap -
25% 30-39 Handicap
- 10%
No Handicap Recorded - 11%
The reason that this is important is that in
all my discussions with a large number of
members the consistent comments were "I'm
not good enough to compete or I didn't know
that higher handicappers could play in
Chapter Championship".
The irony of this is that one of the
differentiators between EWGA and other
women's golf organizations is that it's
the only one that offers competition for
women with handicaps up to 40 on a
national stage. No where else can you
get the feeling of competition at
diverse skill levels and meet women from
across the country.
The other revelation came from our
participation in the Texas Women's
Conference and we had over 60 women
interested in learning how to play the
game of golf to develop their careers.
We have also had feedback from all of
our members that they would like to have
more education opportunities.
Lastly, there were women who indicated
that they just want the camaraderie of
other women and play casual golf without
the competition.
So, with all that information, your 2010
board has made the commitment to make
this years program for "Every Woman".
Your board, or as I refer to them as
Caddies because they "Carry the Club",
have planned:
· golf events with diversity in mind
regarding formats of play and variety of
courses and price ranges
· education clinics this year to
address specific golf skills for all
player levels
· a mentorship program that will go
beyond "Girlfriend Golf" to assist
players to go to their next level in
playing the game and establishing a
handicap
· a new program for our members
called "Player & Caddie of the Year",
which will reward the top participants
of the chapter based upon events played
(Player) and volunteerism (Caddie). For
those of you who volunteered for any of
the events after November 1st of last
year, you have already been accumulating
points! "How Cool is that?"
We are going to announce the specifics
of each of these programs at the
upcoming Annual Kickoff so make your
reservation to attend now. We are very
excited about your programs, especially
since we have doubled, that's right,
DOUBLED the number of golf events and
education clinics from last year. So,
get ready to kick this year off right
and come join in the fun. I am looking
forward to seeing you all soon!

Houston, TX Chapter Leaders Receive Two Top
Awards for 2009
Both women will be honored at the closing gala
awards dinner at the 2010 EWGA Golfpalooza at
the Pinehurst Resort and Spa, in North Carolina
on April 7-10, 2010.
Zona
Trahan Named 2009 Nancy Oliver Founder's Award
Winner
Zona has served in various EWGA volunteer
leadership roles over the past decade
include president of the Houston, TX
Chapter, league chair, membership chair,
Sectional Director and now serves on the
volunteer Chapter Development Specialist
team.
"Through my years of EWGA service, I have
learned so much to help me in both my
personal and professional life," says
Trahan. "I have served with so many
wonderful women with unique skills and
personalities. It is an honor to be
recognized in an organization that is full
of over-achievers."
"Volunteer leadership is the backbone of our
organization," says Pam Swensen, CEO of the
EWGA. "It is because of the thousands of
women like Zona who give freely of their
time and talents that the EWGA continues to
thrive. They share a passion for the game,
provide the welcoming environment that
attracts and keeps more women playing golf,
and through volunteering develop and hone
their own professional skills."
With IBM for nearly 23 years, Trahan is the
Competitive Sales Leader and works to
recruit and drive revenue through
competitive resellers. She has held many
positions in IBM sales with territories
ranging from Houston Petroleum to North
America partners and worldwide system
integrators. She also serves on the board of
directors for the Houston LPGA-USGA Girls
Golf and First Tee of Houston and is a coach

displayed exceptional long-term leadership
and service to the organization.
Robin

Year
A subsurface engineering technician for
ExxonMobil Production Co. in Houston, TX,
Robin, with ExxonMobil for over 25 years,
designs wellwork programs for wells in Chad,
Africa and serves as a mentor to new-hire
engineers. She has served on the board of

served on the board for the United Way
Midland, been recognized as the "Volunteer
of the Year" for the Midland Rape Crisis
Center and is active with Hearts and Hands:
Rebuilding Together Houston, which rebuilds
homes for the underprivileged.
"In the oil and gas production business,
golf is what bridges the gap between the men
and the women and the managers and their
subordinates. It can give you "face-time"
with top management and is an excellent way
to demonstrate how you are as a team
player," says Anderson. "I've made more
business contacts playing golf than I have
at professional society meetings. I believe
the way to break the glass ceiling is with a
well-struck golf ball."
"Robin is such a wonderful example of the
accomplished women who have built our
organization," says Pam Swensen, CEO of the
EWGA. "These dynamic, unique and caring
women have forged greater opportunities for
women to utilize golf for both their
professional and personal lives."
The EWGA Businesswoman of the Year annually
recognizes an EWGA member who has
demonstrated business leadership,
entrepreneurial spirit and expert business

THANK YOU 2009 VOLUNTEERS!!
KEEP READING AND SEE WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE WON!
Just when you thought it was safe to start
reading the weekly newsletter again, HERE I
AM... back at the keyboard. There is a small
bit of 2009 business that needs attending to,
and Lana has graciously allowed me to do what I
do best - drone on and on and on about whatever
happens to pop into my mind.
We had all of the best intentions of pulling
together a spectacular volunteer appreciation
event for the end of the year, but Kickoff
planning started in November, and things got
crazy in a New York minute. (Which is
significantly faster than a Texas minute.) So,
what to do with all of that money we set aside
for volunteer recognition, AND how do we
publicly recognize and thank all of those
volunteers?
Easy answer.
First, all of the amazing women who volunteered
in any way during 2009 will be recognized at our
2010 Kickoff. And to ensure that you are
compelled to attend, we are spending our funds
in the following way:
A drawing for eight tickets to attend the
kickoff! Every volunteer's name was placed into
a hat (okay - all I had was a box), and in a
well-defined process with controls not unlike
those used for the Grammy Awards, we drew names
for those tickets. The winners who will receive
a complimentary ticket to the Kickoff are:
Kathy Sowards Melisa Hargrave
Frida Eliasdottir Adrian
Franka
Pat McKenna Susan Hemminger
Nita Russo Stephanie Flower
And to sweeten the deal even further, we are
going to draw a name the night of the Kickoff
from that very same pool of volunteers for a
free Classic EWGA membership for 2010! (I will
try to find something a little classier than an
old box to use at the Kickoff.) You do not have
to be present to win the membership, but
wouldn't it be fun to be there and hear your
name called?
On a personal note, I want to thank each and
every person who contributed to our successes in
2009. Volunteers are the backbone of our
organization. Without you, the Board begins to
get overworked, and then they tend to get
grumpy. There is nothing worse than attending a
meeting every month with a bunch of grumpy
women. So THANK YOU for making my job as the
2009 President "grump-free" by stepping up and
volunteering for your Chapter!
