EWGA Houston 2008

Kick Off Recap

When your Board billed the 2008 EWGA Houston Kickoff Event as THE social event of the year, we were counting on you - the members - to pull it off. You did NOT disappoint.

We had 70 people in attendance. Not bad for a school night, huh? Between the drawings for prizes and the silent auction, we raised $1600 to use toward events and stuff throughout the year. We accumulated other donations that will be used at events during the year. (Includes 2 round trip tickets donated by Continental Airlines that will be used to award volunteerism for 2008.) And get this - FIVE NEW MEMBERS JOINED!

So, where did all the stuff come from for drawings, silent auction, and future give-aways? Hey, we'd be lost without the support of the following companies and individuals. (And whenever you can, please give these companies your vote and your support by giving them your business.)

Continental Airlines
Urban Soles
Belle Ami
GolfTEC
Redstone Golf
Carol Mann
The RoomStore
BearCreek GC
Teri Beahm
Edwin Watts
WildCat GC
Robin Anderson
Golf Galaxy
Jim Hardy
Susan Jenkins
Joes Golf House
U of H Baseball Coaches
Luanne Jones
Lake Windcrest Golf Club

And the evening just kept getting better as our vendors had demonstrations, and one-on-one consultations, and just helped everyone to have a great time. Again, please support these folks with your business.

But the highlight of the evening was when Carol Mann took the stage and began to banter with us about her career. She was mentored by the great Patty Berg, and had some amazing stories to tell about growing up with the LPGA tour. The culmination of the talk came with her explanation about the red sequin dress in her locker at the World Golf Hall of Fame.

It seems that her step-mother made the dress for her specifically for the induction. On the evening of the awards ceremony, Carol noticed that just about everyone in the room was dressed in black and that there was quite a bit of discussion among the producers and cameramen about the woman in the red dress. As it turns out, shiny red things tend to bleed their color onto everything around them through the lens of a television camera. Who knew?

Carol wrapped up by pulling a sleeve of balls out of her sleeve or hat or something and showed them to us. Each was signed by several members - including Carol - of the World Golf Hall of Fame. She would give one each to the first three people who would donate $50 to our Chapter. The only way to describe the scene is to compare it to when the doors open at Macy's on the Friday after Thanksgiving. (Too bad
Carol didn't have a few dozen. Our Chapter would be set for life!)

Carol is hosting an interactive clinic designed especially for beginning women golfers on April 14th (more info on our website) to help support the Women's Home.  It's a Monday, and I can't think of a better way to start the week or a better cause to take me away from work. The beauty of EWGA is that we are a group of women supporting women. Let's get out and support Carol and the LPGA Players Invitational Tournament (taking place the same day) in any way that we can.

A very special thank you to Irma's Southwest Grill. HOLY SMOKE!! What an incredible place to hold an event, and what an AMAZING staff! We were spoiled and pampered from the day we signed the contract to hold the event at their establishment until the last car was loaded and heading home that evening. We are definitely keeping them on our short list of places to party. Keep an eye on the calendar for a social event there sometime this summer.

Last, but certainly not least, we could not have accomplished Kickoff without the following group of ladies who all pitched in to make the Kickoff the success that it was:

(In order of height)
Robin Anderson
Elizabeth Hardy
Susan Jenkins
Susan Kincaid
Celia Norman-Auzenne
Kathy Sowards
Zona Trahan
Luanne Jones
